Meet stereo2mono, the essential tool for producers and mixing engineers. It handles the boring but crucial multi-track prep that happens before a session is ready to mix, edit, master or deliver.

Drop a folder into s2m and it detects mono-in-stereo files (stereo files carrying mono audio signal), converts them to true mono, and leaves genuine stereo untouched. The result is cleaner multitracks, less space used and lighter sessions. This is the fast but crucial fix you reach for before the real work begins.

stereo2mono does more than just cleaning up mono-in-stereo files. It can resample to target rates, preserve or convert bit depth, peak-normalise to your chosen dBFS target, flag clipped files, skip empty files and duplicates, and export everything into a clean new folder.

Your originals stay untouched, your folder structure can stay intact, and your output comes out predictable every time.

stereo2mono is seriously fast. Even while handling multiple steps at once - conversion, optional resampling, bit depth changes, normalisation and a full log - it runs at around 9 times the speed of many DAWs sample rate conversion alone.

You are not trading features for performance. You are getting a complete delivery pipeline that finishes quicker. And there is no friction in the way - no iLok and no internet connection required.

Session Prep Without The Admin

Instant mono cleanup

Instant mono cleanup

Detect stereo-in-mono files and convert them to true mono audio files, while leaving real stereo files completely untouched. It'll result in less clutter, less wasted hard drive space and less processing in your DAW.

Delivery specs, sorted

Choose the target sample rate, preserve or convert bit depth, and peak-normalise to your chosen dBFS target in the same pass. stereo2mono allows for maximum flexibility, and it adapts to your chosen targets.

Problems caught early

Flag clipped files, detect empty files, skip duplicates if needed, and avoid dragging unnecessary clutter into the session.

Problems caught early

Full visibility

stereo2mono always runs a quick preflight to show you exactly what will happen. When you're happy to process the files, you receive live progress updates, and a detailed .txt report log saved in the new folder.

Clean exports

Clean exports

Converted files are written to a new folder that mirrors your original subfolder structure. Source files are left untouched, so you can always go back to the originals for reference if you need to.

Finishing touches

Optionally add numbered index prefixes, append _MONO to converted files' names, and detect byte identical duplicates and empty files to keep multitracks predictable.

True mono detection.
Batch processing.
Offline activation.

FAQ

What is stereo2mono?
stereo2mono is a batch file utility that scans a folder of audio files and automatically detects stereo files that contain mono audio, then converts them to true mono while leaving real stereo untouched. It can also resample, change bit depth, and peak normalise in the same pass.
What files does it support?
WAV and AIFF only: .wav, .wave, .aif, .aiff.
What channel formats does it support?
Mono and stereo are supported. Multi channel files over 2 channels are skipped.
How does it decide what is mono-in-stereo?
It analyses the left and right channels and looks for extremely high similarity. When left and right carry the same signal, the file is treated as dual mono and converted to mono using the LEFT channel.
Where do the processed files go?
Outputs are written into a new s2m folder inside the selected folder. Subfolder structure is preserved. If an s2m folder already exists, stereo2mono creates s2m_2, then s2m_3, and so on.
Can I standardise sample rate and bit depth at the same time?
Yes. You can resample from 44.1k to 192k and choose bit depth Preserve, 24 bit, or 32 bit float. These options can run together with conversion and normalisation, all in one pass.
Does it normalise loudness or peak?
Peak. Normalisation is to a selectable dBFS peak target.
Does it need iLok or an internet connection?
No. stereo2mono does not require iLok, and it does not require an internet connection to run. It can be activated offline.
Where can I find the manual?
You can read the full User Manual here.
